The Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for two full-time Research Scientist/Engineer 1 positions. This position will involve human immunology studies at the Center for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (CERID) located at the UW Medicine campus in South Lake Union’s “biotechnology hub.”
The lab’s focus is on understanding the human immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), the causative agent of tuberculosis. Specifically, the lab studies the role of T cells that are responsible for mediating protective immunity. The PI works closely with a number of international collaborators and the lab regularly deals with human blood or tissue samples. The candidate will assist in the development of assays to profile T cells using flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, PCR, and RNA-sequencing. These assays will be used to study samples collected during clinical trials of new vaccines or treatments for tuberculosis. A strong work ethic, attention to detail, and good written and oral communication skills are essential.
Under general directions, responsibilities include:
1. Perform assays to study human T cell responses to mycobacterial lipid antigens. This includes optimizing methods to clone and exogenously express T cell receptors.
2. Perform multi-parameter flow cytometry experiments using existing panels. This includes validation of individual reagents constituting the panel and assuring that the complete panel provides sensitive detection with minimal artifact.
3. Maintain and use LRSFortessa flow cytometer in the lab. This includes careful attention to quality control regarding machine performance and processing clinical samples with attention to batch effects and consistent data quality.
4. Data analysis using standard software (e.g. Excel and Prism) as well as interpretation of results. This also includes liasing with bio-informatician in the lab and presentation of data at guest lab meetings and local conferences.

Bachelor's Degree in the Biological Sciences or related field plus up to one year of relevant experience (e.g. cellular immunology or molecular biology)
Time management and communication skills
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
