Department of Food Science, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS), Rutgers University, New Brunswick has position for a Post-Doctoral Associate position (CY) to work in Dr. Mukund V. Karwe's laboratory, preferably starting from July 5, 2021. The salary offered for this position will be $ 54,000 (CY). The candidate hired for this position will assist in primarily conducting research as prescribed by Dr. Karwe. The Post-Doctoral Associate will also assist Dr. Karwe in graduate and undergraduate student supervision, and teaching when Dr. Karwe is traveling. The research areas are primarily focused on: 1.) Use of plasma activated water and mist in hydroponic growing, microbial safety and quality of sweet basil in pilot plant and in greenhouse and 2.) Mathematical/Numerical modeling of microbial attachment and detachment during produce washing. In addition, the candidate may be asked to work on various food processing projects including extrusion and high-pressure processing as needed. The candidate also will assist Dr. Karwe in preparation of grant applications and manuscripts for publications.
Minimum Education and Experience:
The position requires a Ph.D. in Food/Agricultural/Biological/Chemical/Biochemical Engineering with some experience in mathematical modeling and numerical simulation. Ability to conduct basic microbiological analysis is desirable.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The applicant must have evidence of scholarly publications in scientific journals. The position requires someone who can work independently with minimum supervision, as well as work in a team environment.
Extruders; texture analyzers; computers and simulation software for mathematical modelling; high-pressure processing equipment; and plasma jet, gliding arc plasmatron, and a DBD plasma activated mist generator.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Normal bench-top and pilot plant work in a food processing/food science research laboratory.
