Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Part Time Staff Nurse for the New Jersey State Prison, located in Trenton, New Jersey.
The Staff Nurse demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the psychological and physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Gives clinical care and manages all aspects of nursing care for inmates in the Department of Corrections' (DOC) facilities including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) and their family.
Uses psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders: to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions delineating nursing actions unique to each inmate's needs.
Uses knowledge of behavioral concepts such as anxiety, loss, grief and anger to assist the inmate in coping, adapting and dealing constructively with feelings.
Uses effectively and therapeutically principles of communication theory, interviewing techniques, problem solving and crisis intervention with inmates and their families, as indicated by feedback from team members and supervisory review.
Evaluates inmate responses in collaboration with multi-disciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
As a first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds). Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments, ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential, extensive reading required, extended sitting is required, intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities , ability to move from unit to unit within correctional facilities, frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls, manual dexterity and mobility for charting, hearing and sight are essential, ability to speak clearly is required, may be required to travel within the state, ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.
Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
