The Dawson laboratory studies the cell death pathways of neurodegenerative diseases.The current study focuses on the motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease and neural injury in stroke, using mouse models and cell culture assays. We employ a myriad of techniques including protein analysis via western blot and translation assays, live-cell fluorescent imaging, immunohistochemistry/ immunocytochemistry, stereotaxic injections, surgery, viral circuit tracing, and new projects utilizing optogenetics, DREADS, in vivo electrophysiology and calcium imaging paired to behavior assays. The Dawson lab is diverse with over 40 people that include instructors, postdocs, technicians, and graduate and undergraduate students from all over the world.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of a junior investigator, the technician will be responsible for animal husbandry of a transgenic mouse colony.
Maintain breeding colony of multiple mouse strains, including record keeping and genotyping.
Inject animals and harvest primary tissue specimens according to protocols.
Harvest and process brains for immunohistochemistry/ immunocytochemistry, and imaging. Assist in stereotactic injections.
Perform and analyze behavioral tasks.
Maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment.
Aid manager with laboratory support related tasks and biosafety adherence.
Basic cell culture work including isolation and culture of primary cells, maintenance of immortalized cell lines and cell counting.
Molecular Biology techniques like western blot, protein purification, RNA/ DNA extraction, transfection and transformation.
With more experience the technician will also be expected to help with other investigator's studies within the Dawson lab.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
Bachelor's degree in a biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, or other biologically related
Some laboratory experience with general molecular biology techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis are desires as is mouse handling.
