This is a half-time (0.50 FTE, 20 hours/week) grant-supported position with anticipated funding through April 30, 2023. The qualified individual will be assigned to the 'Center for Genetic Studies of Drug Abuse in Outbred Rats' project, which aims to determine the genetic basis of behavioral traits thought to predispose individuals to drug abuse. The incumbent will work under the supervision of Keita Ishiwari, PhD, and David Dietz, PhD, and will be an employee of The Research Foundation for SUNY.
Conduct animal behavioral experiments: The incumbent will be responsible for daily testing of animals (rats) using operant test procedures. This will involve handling animals and operating computers that conduct the behavioral procedures and collect data.
Data handling and analysis: The incumbent will run data-analysis programs, enter data into computers, and analyze data using graphics and other data analysis software. The incumbent will become sufficiently acquainted with the goals of the experiments so that unusual results can be noticed and reported and will assist in the final analysis of data or preparation of figures for publication in scientific journals.
Tissue harvesting: At the completion of behavioral experiments, the incumbent will collect tissue samples of animals for genetic analysis.
Laboratory maintenance: The incumbent is responsible for daily laboratory maintenance, such as keeping laboratory work areas tidy and cleaning and inspecting laboratory equipment, including experimental chambers, scales, and computers, to assure that they are in proper working order. Monitoring supplies and reordering them as required.
Animal care: The incumbent will provide care for laboratory animals according to the standards established by the United States Food and Drug Administration and those outlined in the Protocol which has been approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee of the University at Buffalo. This will include examination of animals, monitoring of their eating and drinking, and watering, feeding and weighing them, depending on the goals of the experiment.
Other Activities: Responsible for overall organization of project(s) under the direction of Drs. Ishiwari and Dietz. Supervised daily by Dr. Ishiwari or other designated personnel, but must also be able to work independently and be flexible in response to the changing demands of the research environment.

Education in biological or behavioral sciences or related field and one year of experience in a research setting including experience working with animals and in data collection and management. Experience conducting behavioral experiments with rodents is a plus. Computer skills with word processing and spreadsheet programs are also required. Good organizational and communication skills are important. Must be able to work independently, handle multiple projects, and respond to priority changes.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in biological or behavioral sciences or related field. Experience conducting behavioral experiments with rodents is highly desirable.
