The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a Farrier Assistant. The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion, equine, and food animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour state-of-the-art care.
In consultation with clinical veterinarians and the LVMC Farrier, this position provides both advanced and basic farrier services for LVMC patients. Responsibilities of this position include teaching principles of therapeutic and basic shoeing to veterinary students, providing continuing education courses for farriers, and developing plans for, and constructing therapeutic shoes for horses with a variety of musculoskeletal problems Additionally, this position will provide basic and advanced foot care to patients within the Food Animal Hospital. This position will provide support for the LVMC farrier caseload.
The successful candidate must have basic farrier skills, will have a strong work ethic, and must be self-motivated, able to work independently or with a team, maintain confidentiality, and be detail-oriented. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work with and supervise the work of others. Lastly, maintaining a professional positive, compassionate and empathetic nature towards the clients/patients and other referring farriers is essential for success in this position.
