Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is currently searching for two seasonalWHOI Retail Associates to join the Communications Department. These are temporary, casual, non-exempt positions, and are eligible for casual benefits.
These positions supports the day-to-day store operations of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Ocean Science Discovery Center or Visitor Center. These positions maintains a positive atmosphere for customers and visitors (internal/external) within the Center, and ensures smooth daily operation of the WHOI Discovery Center (the institutions primary visitor facility).
These are seasonal positions beginning approximately mid-May and ending in September 2021.
The internal title for these positions is Discovery Center Assistant .
Customer Service :
Sells merchandise which includes both processing online orders and point-of sales in the WHOI stores (the two store locations are conveniently located in the Woods Hole Village)
Greets customers, visitors, and the general public include providing accurate information about WHOI
Retail Operations :
Restocking, folding, pricing, and counting inventory, cleans displays and exhibits
Opens/closes the Discovery Center/Visitor Center (as needed)
Performs other duties as deemed necessary
Education & Experience
High School Diploma is required
Required attributes include good customer relations, tact, friendliness, enthusiasm, flexibility, ability to take direction, and care and accuracy with receipts and record
Ability to work a flexible schedule; must be able to work at least (two) weekends a month (schedule on a rotation)
Ability to work any one of the following shifts:
10:30 am - 4:30 pm: Monday-Friday (May & June)
10:30 am - 4:30 pm: Sunday-Thursday and 10:30 am - 7:30 pm: Friday-Saturday (July & August)
Schedules vary: 4-6 hour shifts (3-4 day work schedule)
*Schedule is typically prepared a month in advance
Experience working with the public and retail operations is preferred
Familiarity with computer systems in a retail setting is a plus
Familiarity with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and vicinity a plus
Physical duties for this position include, but are not limited to lifting and carrying 25-50 pounds 10 times a day and frequent prolonged standing/walking. Other physical requirements include kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, use of hands for basic amd fine grasping/manipulation, pushing, pulling, and reaching above and below the shoulders. Occupational requirements include depth perception, near, far, and peripheral vision as well as ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing, talking, working around others, and working with others. There may be exposure to dust or other irritants.
