The North Mississippi Research and Extension Center (NMREC) seeks an Assistant Professor to lead the sweetpotato Extension and research program at the Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch Experiment Station in Pontotoc, Mississippi. This 12-month tenure-track appointment (75% Extension, 25% research) will be administratively housed at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center with an academic home in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University (MSU). This is a faculty position with Mississippi State University Extension and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES).
The NMREC is one of four Research and Extension Centers in the MSU System. The Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch Experiment Station in Pontotoc, MS is one of four NMREC branch stations. The Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch Experiment Station consists of 640 acres located just 60 miles from the main MSU campus. It serves as the primary host location for sweetpotato research and Extension programs in Mississippi including the Mississippi Sweetpotato Foundation Seed Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Specifically, the successful candidate will be expected to:
1. Provide leadership for sweetpotato Extension programs that serve the Mississippi sweetpotato industry: * Develop program curricula and provide sweetpotato subject matter technical expertise and programmatic training for stakeholders and Extension Agents in all areas of sweetpotato production, harvest, post-harvest, storage, food safety, marketing, and foundation seed production. Provide educational support to 4-H sweetpotato programming. * Serve as a liaison with stakeholders including external organizations such as the Mississippi Sweetpotato Council to maintain and expand sweetpotato-focused, productive working interactions with MSU. * Participate in the Plant Systems Extension program planning team and ensure that sweetpotato education is appropriately represented in the statewide Extension Plan of Work. This includes timely needs-based program planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and impacts reporting. * Perform other duties to support sweetpotato Extension programming as assigned.
2. Provide leadership for sweetpotato research efforts: * Develop a robust sweetpotato research program based on needs assessments and funding opportunities. * Provide operational oversight and supervision of research staff and the MAFES Sweetpotato Foundation Seed Program. * Manage resources as part of a team at the Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch Experiment Station. * Perform other duties to support sweetpotato research efforts as assigned.
3. Serve as a productive Extension and research faculty member: * Secure extramural funding. * Publish in appropriate Extension and research outlets including peer-reviewed academic journals, Extension publications and MAFES bulletins, popular press, and social media. * Recruit, train, and advise graduate students and serve on graduate committees. * Serve on department, college, and university committees and in professional associations including the National Sweetpotato Collaborators Group. * Contribute to a collegial work environment and foster productive working relationships with specialists, scientists, Extension Agents, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. 4. Develop and teach educational programs to the appropriate clientele and county Extension Agents based on national, state, and county needs assessments. These documented Program Plans will include documented curricula that can be delivered and evaluated by the successful candidate and/or county Extension Agents resulting in measured impacts.
A Ph.D. in a plant or soil science, agronomy, horticulture, or closely related discipline is required. The successful candidate will have practical knowledge of agriculture, enabling him/her to work with public and private entities and agricultural producers in Mississippi to develop systems solutions to practical sweetpotato crop production, harvest, and storage issues. Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills are required for the position. Experience with sweetpotato production is desirable.
Applicants with Extension and/or research experience in sweetpotato and a working knowledge of laboratory and greenhouse operations are preferred. Applicants with professional resource and personnel management experience are preferred.
