Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking two experienced Resource Technologists for immediate openings in the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory directed by Darryl Pappin. The successful candidates will broadly apply proteomics, metabolomics and protein chemistry approaches in basic research, including cancer, neuroscience, and plant biology fields. The individuals will play a critical role in executing technical protocols and laboratory experiments using established protocols. At the same time, a successful candidates will be able to assist in the development of novel experimental designs, workflows, and new analytical methods. The successful candidates will join a vibrant group of innovative scientists in a world-renowned research community. The CSHL Mass Spectrometry group has broad expertise in various mass spectrometry applications, including protein identification, quantitative proteomics, metabolomics, phospholipid analysis, and redox proteomics. The group is led by Darryl Pappin, a world leader protein chemistry and proteomics, with a strong track record for technology and software development. The MASCOT search software and the isobaric iTRAQ chemistry were both developed in his laboratories. Under Pappin, the CSHL Mass Spectrometry group has contributed to a wide variety of discoveries in cancer and more fundamental biology. These include the first characterization of persulfide modifications of protein tyrosine phosphatases, the identification of a potential cancer therapeutic from wheat germ extract and characterization of a completely novel class of copper chelators. In cancer biology, contributions include discoveries in the redox biology of Nrf2, the role of the CA19-9 antigen in pancreatic cancer, and the mechanism of action of the PTEN tumor suppressor. Job Description: The successful candidates will perform day-to-day operations in the Mass Spectrometry Core, with responsibility for scheduling and tracking projects, and ensuring projects are performed in a timely fashion and with high quality. Job responsibilities will include supervised operation and maintenance of instrumentation, as well as maintaining general lab working conditions, stocks, inventories, databases and general lab organization. The individuals will conduct technical tasks and laboratory experimentation under general supervision using established or project-specific protocols and SOPs. They will also be able to contribute to developing test plans, experimental designs, and analytical methods. They will also draft monthly or final reports, especially for small projects or projects requiring routine analysis and testing.
Candidates should have a BSc or Masters in a scientific discipline, preferably in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field. Preferred applicants should have some experience in the operation of mass spectrometers in the fields of either proteomics, protein chemistry, or metabolomics and lipidomics, preferably with experience in a core facility. Prior experience in the areas of small molecule, and/or general protein analysis and purification (e.g. HPLC, SDS-PAGE, protein assays, Westerns, colorimetric assays, precipitations, etc.), and general laboratory techniques is required. Familiarity and skills with Mass Spec search engines and data analysis pipelines for quantitative proteomics or metabolomics is also preferred, but not essential. The successful candidates should be able to work effectively in a team while also being able to plan and execute work independently.
