LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Assistant System Administrator to join its team. LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe. Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses. The LIGO Laboratory's mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.
Life at LIGO Livingston as a Caltech Employee LIGO's observatory in rural Livingston Parish, Louisiana, is an approximately 35-minute commute from Baton Rouge, LA., and is about 1 hour 20 minutes from New Orleans. Caltech employs a staff of 42 at the Livingston observatory. Caltech has an extraordinary science impact across many fields. Carry out system administration of computer systems and networks used for detector control, data acquisition and analysis. Includes account management, backups, system patches, hardware and software installation and configuration.
Assist users in learning applications, operating system fundamentals on the computer systems.
Audit and update system documentation.
Update and maintain monitoring and alert systems.
Support detector and observatory operations at the Livingston observatory. This may include being on-call for occasional work after-hours or on weekends.
Depending on capabilities, participate in development and testing of new detector control and data acquisition software and systems. May include programming and configuration of real-time software and operating systems.
Learn new skills and further develop existing ones for career growth and more effective contributions.
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent knowledge and experience, in Computer Science, information technology or relevant STEM field.
Experience with general Linux system administration tools and processes.
General knowledge of scripting language programming (Python, Perl or UNIX shells).
Communications and interpersonal skills necessary to assist users in learning application and operating system fundamentals and configurations.
Ability to write documentation for system administration and user support.
Possess a valid driver's license at the start of employment and maintain it throughout the course of employment.
Ability to travel by air, largely to other LIGO sites, may be required. Time away will generally be less than 4 weeks per year.
Ability to lift equipment and/or instruments weighing 20 or more pounds.
General skills in C and C++ programming.
General understanding of Apple OS X, iOS and Microsoft Windows operating systems
Ability to perform application programming for data analysis (i.e. MATLAB)
