The Office of Professionalism and Civility at the Columbia University Medical Center Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons has the overall responsibility to build mechanisms to cultivate institutional ethical and moral responsibility for professionalism and civility; and to develop communication strategy and training programs aimed at creating a working and learning environment in which all members of the Columbia community treat each other with courtesy, civility, respect, fairness, and with an awareness of the potential impact their behavior has on others. The Director of Compliance and Training reports to the Assistant Vice President of Faculty Affairs.
Manage and direct policy compliance training for faculty, officers of research and other relevant audiences focused on anti-racism, diversity, and CUIMC standards of conduct.
Engaging in pro-active outreach to ensure that the Office of Professionalism and Civility is conducting training for all appropriate Medical Center populations
Working strategically and collaboratively with Medical Center constituents, to develop trainings that meet the needs of those constituents
Working strategically and collaboratively with key Medical Center and University constituents to develop and administer joint trainings, where appropriate.
Creating new and updating existing training materials to ensure that they are fresh, engaging and up to date with applicable policy and laws
Implementing pre and post training assessments and providing data from those assessments to areas and departments that received the training.
Working strategically and collaboratively with appropriate University offices to ensure congruence, consistency and effectiveness of programs across campus
Informing the CUIMC community of the procedures available to register complaints which are investigated and addressed without fear of retaliation
Key Medical Center and University constituents include, but are not limited to: Office of the General Counsel, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA), Public Safety, University Ombuds, CUIMC Chief Diversity Officer, CUIMC-Human Resources, NYP-Human Resources and NYP Respect Office, Center for Teaching and Learning
The types of training programs to be managed and directed by this position include, but are not limited to:
General overview of the University's policies and procedures on professionalism, civility, respect, misconduct, anti-racism, diversity, implicit/explicit bias, and anti-retaliation.
Individual trainings to address conduct inconsistent with University policy/standards
Workshops related to Respect, Professionalism, Civility, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
Direct the Professionalism Office Operations
Working collaboratively with the AVP to develop formal and informal procedures for handling incidents of potential policy violations
Participating in academic officers' grievances, complaints, or allegations of disrespectful behavior, harassment or other potential abuses. Ensure proper investigation into allegations and claims, documentation of information and findings, and communication of outcomes. Keeps involved parties abreast of investigation status, next steps, needs and risks.
Developing a database to monitor case progress, outcomes and trends, and generates report on case data
Conducting mediations or facilitated conversations
Ensuring details of investigations are documented, vetted, and properly disseminated in the organization to involved parties, as appropriate.
Directing the Office of Professionalism and Civility Manager to maintain records related to all trainings and education related professionalism, civility and respect
Providing compliance support through education, resources, oversight and assistance to the CUIMC community
Identifying and developing initiatives to address specific areas of compliance
Developing materials/newsletters to complement training and compliance efforts and to keep the campus community informed of Office of Professionalism and Civility policies and procedures
Supervising the Office of Professionalism and Civility Manager
Performing other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree or other advanced degree preferred. Minimum of seven to nine years relevant experience required.
Experience in a faculty/researcher/staff facing crisis or advising function strongly preferred. Experience in legal or compliance related field. Familiarity with federal, state and local protected class designations and laws; civil rights laws, and employment and labor laws; experience providing trainings, mediation and/or presentations to faculty, staff and students. Demonstrated commitment to the principles of respect, collegiality, civility , equity, inclusion and non-discrimination.
Ability to work with confidential information in a discreet and professional manner. Must be self-directed with effective interpersonal, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills. Must have strong analytical and project management skills. Ability to prioritize and respond to requests in a timely and knowledgeable manner. Requires the flexibility and adaptability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are critical. Proven experience in working collaboratively and effectively with varied constituencies across a large organization. Demonstrated skill in tracking and maintaining data and developing reports, including a strong working knowledge of tools for managing and presenting data. Must have advanced Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).
