This position involves conducting research on microbe-host interactions relevant to inflammatory bowel disease. Specifically, our research focuses on mechanistically understanding how the enteric microbiota regulates intestinal epithelial biology, with an emphasis on Paneth cells. Using novel ex vivo and in vivo approaches, including gnotobiotics, the applicant will study how various clinically-relevant microbes differentially regulate Paneth cell biology. The applicant will be required to perform animal experiments independently and will interface with collaborating laboratories and cores to: i) enumerate Paneth cells and analyze antimicrobial peptide production; ii) perform bulk RNA-seq on isolated PCs; and iii) characterize the impact of probiotic species on Paneth cell function in the context of NSAID-induced enteritis.
Note: Initial appointment is 12 months; opportunity to renew appointment up to five years max.
Education and Experience:
Prior experience with following techniques is preferred: 1) handling mice (e.g. handling and restraint, genotyping, ear tagging, necropsy, biological fluid and tissue collection); and 2) molecular biology techniques (e.g. qRT-PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, Western blots, flow cytometry, histology, immunofluorescence, and tissue and bacterial culture).
