Responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical and related hazards. Works with all university departments that use chemicals to minimize environmental health and safety risks and to manage compliance with applicable regulations and industry best practices. Procures supplies, chemicals, and equipment for department and research grants. Manages budgets as assigned.
At least a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field and two years of work experience in chemical safety or another related field. Demonstrated knowledge of project management principles and application. Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated skill with common computer applications. Strong record-keeping and organizational skills. The ability to work with a diverse student and staff population involved in a wide variety of research, education, and maintenance functions as well as encourage compliance, safety improvement, and risk reduction in a cooperative manner. The ability to identify potential chemical and other hazards in the workplace. Able to respond to after-hours and weekend emergency and non-emergency situations.
At least a master's degree in a related discipline. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification.
