Under general direction, performs biomedical research under general supervision. Directs the day to day operation of the lab; makes purchasing decisions; maintains inventories of standard supplies; enforces safety compliance; coordinates repair of laboratory equipment; trains lab members on standard laboratory protocols; acts as the primary contact person for vendor representatives, training the lab members on lab support activities, and filling in for other lab members support duties when they are absent from the lab. Supervises the student workers in the lab, focusing on safety and work schedules.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists with research projects and performs independent research; plans, designs and implements research projects; performs various assays separates and purifies various materials and substances using such techniques as electrophoresis; makes purchasing decisions and orders laboratory supplies, performs library research; interprets experimental data; performs minor equipment repairs; cuts, stains and mounts specimens; compiles processes and analyzes data; records research procedures and results; codes data for input for electronic data processing; inputs and retrieves data using computers. Sets-up and operates various scientific apparatus; sets-up and operates spectrophotometer, centrifuges, incubators, homogenizers, and various microscopes.
Prepares and maintains culture media, reagents, and experimental animals; grows cultures (cell viral, etc.); sterilizes equipment; prepares compounds; makes ordering decisions; maintains laboratory stocks; interfaces with external vendors; coordinates equipment repair; ensures laboratory procedures (safety and operational) are done correctly and promptly by lab members; assigns and supervises performance of routine laboratory support activities by other lab members; performs lab support duties when the assigned lab member is unavailable.
Training and supervising junior lab members; performs supervisory and training duties for junior lab members, particularly undergraduate students in the lab.
Performs various clerical duties including: preparing correspondence, preparing and maintaining records of inventories; completes applications and forms. Tracks inventory of supplies and monitors various project budgets
Performs other duties as assigned.
PhD, MD, or related doctoral degree in science; Knowledge involving laboratory techniques or other specialized knowledge is desired; At least 2 years experience as a laboratory manager plus at least 2 years research experience at the doctoral level (the lab manager and research positions may have been concurrent) .
