Job Description Summary: CMS Adjunct YPCO Conductor - Conducts the Young People's Concert Orchestra (YPCO) of the Community Music School of Webster University. YPCO is a Full Orchestra. Emphasizes development of ensemble skills, intonation, rhythm, and sight-reading, performs original and arranged orchestral literature. Past repertoire includes: Die Fledermaus Overture-Strauss (ed. Kennedy), Finale to Symphony No. 5-Shostakovich (arr. Bulla), and An American in Paris Suite Gershwin (arr. Whitney). Orchestra size is 70-80 students from elementary, middle, and high school age range.
Preferred Qualifications Full orchestra conducting experience required; previous youth orchestra experience preferred; experience with wide age group (elementary, middle, and high school) required.
Essential Duties Conducts all YPCO rehearsals and concerts; selects musical excerpts and audition requirements; attends in-person auditions or reviews audition videos; determines musician seating; communicates stage and sectional coaching needs to CMS Staff; plans concert season and music selection in consultation with CMS Director; recruits area students.
Routinely communicates with CMS Ensembles Representative; attends CMS faculty meetings and regular meetings with CMS Director and Ensembles Representative; participates in ad hoc committee work; encourages students to enroll in individual lessons at CMS; occasional communication with parents/guardians; assists in general promotion of CMS and YPCO within the community; completes Webster University annual trainings.
Schedule: YPCO Rehearsals are Thursdays 4:30 6:30 pm; weekend dress rehearsals and concerts (minimum 2 per year); outside rehearsal preparation (score review, bowings, markings, etc.) and meetings are required; Rehearsals and concerts held at CMS Center in Webster Groves.
