The Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine is seeking a Research Lab Technician Intermediate with B.S. degree with 1-3 years of relevant experience or M.S. degree to assist in experimental laboratory research work and scholarly activities under the direct supervision of a faculty member in research projects related to inflammation and cancer of the hepatobiliary system with a focus on the biliary tract.
Provide research assistance and design experiments, including following: animal surgeries with tissue dissections; cardiac puncture; human and animal tissue fixation and sectioning; immunohistochemical staining of tissue sections; digital microscopy; gene expression by qRT-PCR; performing RNA/DNA isolation, flow cytometry, and Western blot; cell culture and gene transfer experiments. Provide technical assistance in operation and calibration of instrumentation and other research equipment, and ensure equipment is operating according to specifications (45%)
Analyze data and prepare reports using microscopy, molecular biology techniques, Microsoft office. GraphPad, and Photoshop programs. Contribute to the group scholarly work via visual and written data presentation and writing research support proposals and acquiring data from outside agencies. Act as a liaison with other departments, programs or organizations for acquiring data and sharing information related to the research project (10%)
Perform advanced literature searches relevant to the research, participate in writing certain components of progress reports and manuscripts. Serve as a co-author for publications and presenter of results in formal meetings. Participate in staff conferences related to the progress of the project(s) (5%)
Maintain transgenic and mutant mouse colony (20%)
Train and supervise part-time undergraduate research assistants and volunteers in a lab. Train users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques. Explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operation limitations and outcomes (10%)
Maintain lab supplies and stocks (5%)
Oversight of IACUC and OSEH standards for the laboratory (5%)
The techniques routinely employed in the lab include mouse genetics, generating and maintaining tissue cultures, histology, and qRT-PCR. The applicant is required to be familiar with these techniques as documented by direct experience or indirectly through training in a lab that employed these methods. The applicant would be expected to demonstrate proficiency in these techniques within the first 4 months of hire. The candidate will work both independently and in a team environment on collection of data and analysis of research results and should have exquisite record-keeping and communication skills. To enhance the education experience, the employee will have an opportunity to participate in the weekly lab meetings and didactic sessions.
Bachelor’s Degree with 1-3 years of experience in a biomedical research field are required. Basic laboratory techniques including RNA/DNA isolation, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy, and experience with management of animal colony are required. Basic computing skills including knowledge of Excel, Word, and ImageJ programs for database management, data analysis, and record keeping are required. The candidate must be willing to work with laboratory tissue samples including handling and surgical manipulations. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment is essential. Ability to work with minimal supervision and be able to supervise students and volunteers in a lab is required.
Working with GraphPad, Photoshop, EndNote program experience and human live tissue, biopsy samples, histological sample preparation, and organoid culture experiences are considered a plus.
