The Department of Preventive Medicine of the Keck School of Medicine of USC is seeking an experienced candidate for a full-time non-tenure track assistant, associate professor of clinical faculty position in biostatistics research, consulting, and education.Â Candidates are required to have demonstrable expertise in novel statistical methods for analyzing high-dimensional âomics data and in applying such methods to various genetic epidemiology studies of colorectal cancer or other complex outcomes. Of particular importance is experience in the development of computationally efficient algorithms, implementation of those algorithms in the statistical programming language R, exploitation of resources that allow for high-performance computing, and wide distribution of new methods through user-friendly software. Â
This non-tenure track position will be at a rank appropriate for the experience of the applicant.Â The department teaches a broad array of courses in biostatistics at levels ranging from undergraduates to advanced graduate students.Â Â Â Teaching responsibilities for this position would focus on courses in our graduate program in biostatistics (the masterâs and Ph.D. level), with a specific focus on data science, statistical analysis of complex data, and computational methods using the statistical programming language R.Â There will be additional opportunities to develop new courses in these or other areas.Â
The Biostatistics division also provides core biostatistical consulting and collaborative services for the USC Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (SC-CTSI), the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center (NCCC), and the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center (SCHESC).Â Biostatistics consulting through these services primarily occurs with investigators in the USC schools of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and allied health sciences, social work, and/or gerontology.Â Consultations involve study planning, developing data-extraction and database storage systems, analyzing existing data, and preparing manuscripts for publication.Â Consulting activities frequently lead to longer-term biostatistics collaborations on separate projects with support from additional grant funding.Â Â Â The successful candidate will have skills necessary to contribute to ongoing biostatistical/data-science needs of one or more of these services.Â
Candidates should have a doctoral degree in biostatistics or a related field and teaching experience in one or more academic training programs.Â Candidates should also have research and consulting experience, particularly involving the application of biostatistical and/or data-science methods to the analysis of data from a health-related field. Â In addition, candidates should have strong programming skills in the programming language R; additional programming skills in C++, SQL, and/or Python are desirable. Also desirable is a demonstrable track record of developing R packages and of experience with high-performance computing environments, Linux, and parallel processing.
