Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Research Associate, based at the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness (ISC), will work under the direction of Professor Michael Porter and his research team, providing research and writing support across Professor Porter's research streams. These streams include, but are not limited to, strategy and competitiveness within business, politics, and states and nations, economic development, and digital transformation.
Responsibilities include working with Professor Porter and his research team to prepare and edit research deliverables, papers, and presentations, assisting in preparation of company and Harvard Business School case studies on topics related to Professor Porter's research streams, analyzing and maintaining research databases, and conducting related statistical research.
About the Institute:
The Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness (www.isc.hbs.edu) is a joint Institute of Harvard University and Harvard Business School, dedicated to supporting and extending the research pioneered by Professor Porter and disseminating it to scholars and practitioners on a global basis. The ISC mission is to advance scholarship, advise leaders and policymakers, and develop practical, research-based frameworks. Core research areas include: competition and its implications for company strategy, the competitiveness of nations, regions, cities, political reform, healthcare, and solutions to complex social problems.
This is a full-time term appointment starting as soon as possible through June 30, 2021, with strong potential for reappointment. All Research Associate roles at HBS are structured as term appointments. The ideal candidate should be willing to commit to work at the Institute for two or more years in order to attain a mastery of the subject.

Bachelor's degree in economics, public policy, political science, or related field required. Evidence of academic excellence, strong writing and editing skills, and independent research experience. Strong skills related to the Microsoft Office Suite are expected.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong conceptual ability; high quality of mind; excellent writing and editing skills; the ability to work productively under time pressure; the capacity to work well independently; and the ability to interact successfully with senior leaders.
This position requires an individual capable of consistent use of discretion, judgment, and initiative. Evidence of prior high-quality, original academic writing, and background in analysis and interpretation of relevant data, research, news, and literature. Ability to read academic, subject-specific information and write a reasoned and thoughtful analysis, as well as produce a creative interpretation, is a must. Diplomatic skills, comfort in interacting with prominent individuals, and grace under pressure are essential.
