The Commons Residential Fellow (RF) works under the supervision of the Residential Commons faculty directors and area directors, and is responsible for the development and support of programmatic initiatives within a Residential Commons. Residential Fellows are expected to contribute to an academic department or program or other campus life organization. The RF assists in building intellectually-engaging residential communities through interacting regularly with residents, other Residential Fellows, Community Leaders, members of the Commons Councils, and a variety of campus partners. An established link to a academic department/program or campus organization provides opportunities for continued academic growth and preparation or professional development for the RF. These connections will also serve as a conduit for engaging residents with informal educational programming. The RF oversees and executes events, large and small, sponsored by the Residential Commons in a collaborative environment. The RF supports the development of a democratic, vibrant, inclusive, and healthy environment within the context of their living and learning communities.
Programming & Assessment ●Assist with the planning, and coordinate the execution, of large-scale events within the Residential Commons. ●Work closely with Residential Commons Leadership Team to support smaller-scale community events. ●Collaborate with other stakeholders within Colgate and the local community on program initiatives. ●Manage scheduling of program spaces within the Residential Commons buildings in consultation with the directors, using criteria for use of Residential Commons spaces established by the Residential Commons staff. ●Manage the scheduling of programs and events outside of the Residential Commons buildings through the Event Management System. ●Create and disseminate event invitations to the Residential Commons community, and manage email distributions within the Residential Commons. ●Create and manage social media presence for their Residential Commons. ●Oversee budget for large-scale, collaborative programs & events in collaboration with Residential Commons directors. ●Recruit and co-advise the student Residential Commons programming council. ●Provide administrative support to the faculty and staff co-directors for event programming. ●Generate work orders related to program needs. ●Process and track invoices and oversee the Residential Commons budget in collaboration with the faculty and staff directors.
Community Development & Engagement ●Develop and disseminate weekly Residential Commons newsletter promoting events and initiatives occurring in the commons. ●Assist with the establishment and promotion of community standards and expectations. ●Serve as a mentor by engaging regularly with residents. ●Serve on divisional and institutional committees as assigned. ●Work with other departments within the Dean of the College Division on a variety of initiatives. ●Serve as a role model of healthy engagement in the greater campus community.
Intellectual Connection ●Develop a partnership with an academic department/program (e.g., lab research, teaching assistant, etc.) or campus organization (e.g., COVE, Upstate Institute, Shaw Wellness, etc.) committing an average of 10-15 hours per week ●Promote, support and actively participate in faculty engagement in the residence halls. ●Serve as a positive role model in social and academic pursuits. ●Promote an atmosphere within the Residential Commons that supports and encourages intellectual pursuits and academic engagement, ●Identify and assist residents with concerns that are barriers to academic success and make appropriate referrals to professionals as required.
Core Departmental Responsibilities ●Provide direct operational support for the Residential Commons as a member of the Leadership Team. ●Attend and participate in weekly Residential Commons leadership meetings and other meetings are requested. ●Communicate and collaborate regularly with RFs from other Residential Commons. ●Complete regular reports as required by the Director of Residential Life and Residential Commons Directors. ●Select, train, and supervise student interns responsible for oversight of the Residential Commons kitchens. ●Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for the central Residential Commons offices, programs, and kitchens. ●Assist with the coordination of student staff recruitment and selection processes. ●Frequent evening and weekend commitments are expected. ●Other duties as assigned.
Candidates must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills and be capable of creating and maintaining productive and collegial working relationships with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
Colgate degree and/or experience preferred. Minimum one year of student leadership or Residential Life experience preferred.
A valid driver's license preferred.
Bachelor's degree required.
This is a part-time, 10-month, live-in position. Salary is $14.00 an hour with an expectation of 30 hours per week.
Position begins August 9, 2021, and concludes on May 16, 2022.
