Dept Marketing Statement Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin School of Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth.
The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society, and its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers. Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.
This position is one of the three-person team dedicated to the Westside Research Park (WRP) and a member of the Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE) Facilities group reporting to the Director of Facilities. Located at 2300 Delaware Avenue, the 18-acre WRP comprises two primary buildings totalling 105,000 assignable square feet. This multi-disciplinary research facility houses faculty, staff and graduate students from Baskin Engineering Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, the Genomics Instiutute, the Physical & Biological Sciences Materials Sciences Program and the Arts Center for Force Majeure.
Under general direction of the WRP Facility Manager, the facilities assistant performs a wide variety of building operational support. This position is responsible for front line support including noticing, investigating and resolving building plant issues. Position interfaces and collaborates directly with faciities personnel from Physical Planning, Development and Operations, and academic divisions with occupants within WRP. This includes Physical and Biological Sciences, Baskin School of Engineering and the Arts Division. Position will at times assist with special events and may at times, along with others in WRP facilities, augment general facilities services needed. Position may at times need to travel to the main UCSC campus.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: Salary Range: $23.00 - 27.78/hour. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 80% - Facilities Support
Provide first level support to trouble tickets and initial reports of building maintenance issues. This requires taking trouble calls, inputting work requests into the BSOE work order system (RT), providing initial investigation of the problem, solving it or forwarding to the physical plant work order desk with information for resolution. Directly interface with physical plant technicans and/or contractors to provide guidance and escort if necessary. May need to occassionally close off an area for safety or to prevent further problems.
Support minor maintenance tasks not covered by regular custodial staff, facilitate equipment deliveries and moves including moving heavy equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, optics tables. Maintain functionality and appearance of furniture as needed.
Assist with building related issues stemming from minor laborartory modifications and renvoations raising repair requests to appropriate vendors, other campus units, or other responsible parties.
Monitor and review stock of general building supplies such as paper towels, cleaning agents, secondary containers, hazwaste and medical waste bags, sharpes containers and other supplies and advise of necessary purchases.
Maintain an organized facilities office and facilities shop space.
Respond to normal hours lock out calls and assist with entry and access.
Backup Building Coordinator for organization emergency / disaster preparedness for assigned venues, provide backup communication liaison between organization service agencies and building occupants, and assist in preparation of building response plans and with coordination on education of building occupants
Provide secondary backup for the Building Access Administrator; issue physical keys and card /code access per established procedures.
Assist WRP Facility Manager with backup coverage for after hours support. This may at times require overtime, modified schedule an on-call stautus or in call back mode.
10% - Safety and Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste Monitoring and Review Documentation
Conduct regular and peroidic inspection rounds for Safety, Hazmat, Hazwaste and Medical/Biological waste compliance. Inspect areas for security, fire and accident prevention hazards to advise appropriate campus units or occupants to take corrective action. Take immediate and appropriate action as required to ensure personnel and property safety and coordinate long-term/permanent corrective actions are performed by the appropriate campus units. Monitor biological/medical waste storage area to ensure it is in compliance with rules and regulations to include documentation of waste pickups and documentation of weekly inspections conducted and service is received by outside vendors or campus units.
Attend and maintain safety training, adhere to work protocols and safety requirements, including ensuring that personal protection equipment for self and student workers is adequate, worn and used. Follow and recommend best practices for safe use of equipment, ladders and ensure protocols for entering hazardous and biosafety labs are followed by self and student staff.
10% - Event Support & Other Duties
Assist with WRP special events with providing logistics and space preperation support. This may require occasional weekend and evening support.
Oversee assigned day-to-day work of student workers, provide training to student workers.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Basic computer skills with ability to learn and operate various UCSC computer programs, most of which are web based. Comfortable working with Windows 7 and Windows 10 computer operating environment.
Adept and very confortable using web browers, researching on the internet, reading and responding to large volumes of email, using request ticket systems, Google email, tools and Google online calendaring.
Basic knowledge and use of spreadsheet programs such as MS Excel and Google Sheets.
Ablility to learn, use and adhere to internal work control, work flow computer based tickting systems.
Excellent organizational skills to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines, to establish goals and workload priorities to meet project deadlines and within budget and time contraints.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to work as an effective member of a team.
Demonstrated ability to independently learn and absorb new technical and procedural information from a wide variety of sources, including self-guided searches via the internet.
Demonstrated filing, record keeping skills.
Written communication skills to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, and training documents.
