Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Proficient research laboratory specialist with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from professional experience.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Works independently and manages daily research projects.
Capable of independent judgment in the selection, development, performance and evaluation of research methods; operates appropriate equipment.
Hands-on experience with animal experiments, cell cultures and DNA manipulation is required.
Major research responsibilities include purification of pancreatic beta cells and functional characterization using an integrated approach of flow-cytometry, immunofluorescence imaging, proteomics and biochemistry.
Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
Learn and train in additional procedures in order to expand skills, foster individual growth, and directly contribute to and facilitate laboratory success.
Participate in the organization and operation of the laboratory.
Performs general lab maintenance duties, order and manage supplies and reagents of the lab, and maintains excellent written records and electronic databases.
Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate.
Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements.
Bachelor’s degree in cell biology related fields.
At least one year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques required.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
