Assistant Professor of Practice in Mechanical Engineering, Full Time
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice position to start in August 2021. Candidates with higher qualifications may be considered at the rank of Associate Professor of Practice. This is a non-tenure track teaching position with up to a three-year renewable contract, based on satisfactory performance review and availability of funding for the position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include: teaching, revising, and developing undergraduate and graduate courses, and may include both online as well as face-to-face instruction in one or more of the following core mechanical engineering areas: machine design, dynamics and control, solid mechanics, thermal sciences and fluid mechanics. The Mechanical Engineering department is looking for faculty candidates with a passion for teaching and a desire to develop a career in engineering education. Teaching assignments will be made according to background and experience and will consist of up to four courses per semester. The faculty member will also contribute to continuous curriculum improvement, student outcome assessment for ABET accreditation, and developing new educational initiatives. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in department, university, and professional service activities. This is a non-tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
Anticipated Start Date: August 2021
PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. In lieu of a Ph.D., an MS degree in mechanical engineering with at least 8 years of experience in industry as well as at least one-year college level teaching experience in mechanical engineering will also be considered.
PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field from an institution with ABET accredited programs. Experience with teaching Senior Design courses. Previous industrial experience.
