Job Summary The Caltech Controller's Office seeks a motivated, analytical accounting professional to assist with the reconciliation, analysis, and reporting function as well as general accounting duties across various teams, including Property Services, Plant Fund Accounting, Payroll & Benefits Accounting, and General Accounting. Reporting to the Associate Controller, and working closely with Payroll, Finance, HR, and other campus stakeholders, the Staff Accountant will play an integral role in the timely and accurate accounting and reporting of various financial transactions.
Reconciliation of general ledger entries, including in-depth analysis of account activity and providing recommendations on best practices and methods to streamline the reconciliation process.
Prepare and enter journal entries in Oracle using analytical thought and understanding of those entries.
Work with Benefits to timely and accurately record benefits expenses, while guiding the Benefits team to be GAAP compliant
Reconciliation and analysis of payroll related balance sheet accounts
Responsible for the timely and accurate payment of retirement contributions to TIAA, including general ledger analysis.
Reconcile Gross Payroll to Net Payroll
Prepare payroll recaps and reconciliation files and analyze and correct any variances
Assist with various audit requests
Various research and ad hoc reporting as assigned
Coordinate various Property and Sales & Use Tax reporting and payments
Assist with annual College Exemption filings
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field with at least 1 year of experience in accounting or financial management
Strong grasp of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
High integrity and ethics; high sense of personal responsibility and accountability for achieving outcomes; strong focus on quality of work
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
Ability to document procedures effectively
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a collaborative environment
Experience with Excel pivot tables and advanced functions
