A position is available in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University for an ongoing, professional, full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer to assist in the instruction of General Chemistry courses and to play an integral role in curriculum development.
The primary expectation for this position is to work as part of a collaborative General Chemistry Team to develop and teach the course materials, including syllabi, lecture notes, course-content videos, recitation materials, Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) problem sets, Process-Oriented Guided-Inquiry (POGIL) worksheets, exams, and quizzes. The Lecturer will be fully engaged in the continued development, delivery, and smooth operation of the General Chemistry lecture courses. Specific responsibilities include teaching in recitation classes, holding regular office hours and help sessions, managing and training of the graduate teaching assistants, and course administrative duties, such as grading, overseeing weekly content, and composing quizzes, problem sets, and test questions.
The Lecturer is also responsible for promoting the Chemistry Department’s efforts in providing resources to enhance the education of undergraduates in the General Chemistry course. The supplemental program offered to our students includes the following:
In the General Chemistry Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) program, upper-level undergraduates facilitate weekly study groups of six to eight course registrants who perform group exercises and problem solving as part of the learning experience. The size of this program is significant – approximately 85% of the students enrolled in General Chemistry participate, and there are 60 - 70 PLTL leaders each semester. The Lecturer is responsible for overseeing the annual hiring of new peer leaders.
In the Residential Peer Mentoring (RPM) Program, the peer mentors hold walk-in hours in the residential halls and are available to assist students in chemistry. The Chemistry Department provides training to the RPMs and suggests discussion topics and practice problems.
