The Chemistry Department at Washington University in St. Louis administers Supplemental General Chemistry Program to support, mentor, and train students enrolled in our General Chemistry courses.� The Supplemental Program is an essential part of the General Chemistry curriculum, with more than 800 students enrolled and 80 – 100 peer mentors trained per semester.� The Program has three arms; (1) a Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) program, (2) a Transition program, and (3) a Residential Peer Mentoring (RPM) program.� The aspects of the Supplemental Program are managed by different Directors, and we seek a Project Coordinator to work with our faculty and staff to ensure the three aspects are well-integrated, cohesive, and remain strongly interrelated to facilitate administration, enhance the training of the students and mentors, and provide a united message to involved undergraduate students.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Co-Manager of the General Chemistry Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) Program.
The Chemistry PLTL programs involve 60 – 80 upper-level undergraduates as peer leaders and more than 800 General Chemistry students.� These are large supplemental programs with very well-defined philosophy.� The Program Manager will help the Director to administer and develop the programs, including duties as:
Co-teach the SAM (Seminar in Academic Mentoring) course for PLTL leaders and Residential Peer Mentors, to introduce them to the pedagogy and philosophy of PLTL and further deepen their Chemistry knowledge.
Train, mentor, and give feedback from observations of the peer leaders when they meet with their groups.
Formally evaluate the peer leaders to provide feedback.
Organize the students into study groups, taking into account their schedule conflicts, ethnicity, and gender.
Oversee the administration of the selection process of new PLTL leaders.
Program Co-Manager of the General Chemistry Residential Peer Mentor (RPM) Program.
This program is set up by Cornerstone and overseen by Residential Life, but Chemistry trains, mentors, and oversees the ten Chemistry RPMs to ensure they work well with the General Chemistry course.� The program includes:
Serve as lead Instructor to teach the RPMs in the SAM (Seminar in Academic Mentoring) course to train the RPMs to facilitate help sessions and group work sessions properly.
Co-administer the Chemistry RPM program.
Provide feedback from observing the performance of the RPMs.
Serve as a Chemistry Department liaison to administer and oversee the selection process of new Chemistry RPM.
Program Co-Manager of the General Chemistry Transition Program.
The General Chemistry Transition Program helps underprepared chemistry students transition to learning chemistry at a college level.� The program involves 75 – 80 General Chemistry students every year.� The Program Manager will help the Director develop and administer the program, including duties as:
Help the Director evaluate the results of the chemistry assessment exam and the students’ SAT, ACT, and AP STEM scores to identify underprepared or at-risk students.
Support the Director in the extended recitation sections for the Transition Program.
Organize the students into peer mentoring groups, taking into account their schedule conflicts, ethnicity, and gender.
Co-manage the administration of the Transition Program.
Formally observe and evaluate the ten peer mentors and provide feedback.
Participate in Education Research
During the summer months, the Project Coordinator may be involved with educational-development activities or education-research projects, collaboratively with members of the Chemistry faculty, the Teaching Center, or the Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE).
Advanced Administration of General Chemistry Courses
Respond to questions from students about administration of the General Chemistry courses and Supplemental Program, about chemistry content-related questions, about exam and quiz grading, etc.
Proof-reading quizzes, exams, and other course materials for clarity and accuracy.
High-level organization of the supplemental programs for the General Chemistry courses.
Other duties as assigned.
M.A. or M.S. in Science Education, Chemistry or related subject and one year of related experience.
Ph.D. in Chemistry or Science Education will be considered.
M.A. or M.S. in Science Education and two years of teaching experience.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of current teaching methods and pedagogy in the STEM fields.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Willingness to learn innovative teaching techniques and philosophies.
Good management and supervisory skills.
Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.).
This position is full-time and works approximately 37.5 hours per week.

The hiring range for this position is $48,087 - $62,517 annually.
Applicant Special Instructions:
The Project Coordinator will not have any direct exposure to chemicals, but will work in a Chemistry Department with active research and teaching laboratories nearby.
