We are seeking a full-time research technician to conduct defined experiments. Qualified candidates will be detail-orientated, reliable, demonstrate solid written and verbal skills, and have the capacity to learn new techniques. The lab studies genetic mechanisms contributing to the development of inherited human diseases, with a focus on cardiac and muscle disease.By combining gene discovery with the use of model systems, we aim to better understand disease biology and evaluate the potential of new therapeutics. A candidate interested in translational science with a background in biological sciences and previous wet lab experience is preferred
The Research Technologist 1 conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques.
Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.
Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment.
Using an entry level of skill, completes the following activities:
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression
Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
Recombinant virus production and purification
Cell culture, cell isolation
Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining
Antibody production and purification
Breeding and screening transgenic mice
Database management of colony
Records test results and may maintain databases.
Completes standard and routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.
Maintains inventory of reagents, mice and lab supplies.
Completes other duties as assigned.
HS diploma or equivalent and some basic science courses is required.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Demonstrated laboratory experience.
Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols.
Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations.
Attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major.
Preferred candidates will have previous experience in a molecular and/or cell biology research lab.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques.
Cell culture, microscopy, and /or animal model handling experience.
Highly organized and has the ability to multi-task.
Capable of learning new techniques.
