The UWMC-Montlake Neurosurgery Cinic has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time MEDICAL ASSISTANT. The Medical Assistant (MA) performs patient care duties required to assist health care professionals in the assessment and treatment of outpatients with cognitive difficulties. Major duties include obtaining vital signs and a current medication list, preparing treatment environment, performing clerical functions and scheduling appointments. The MA also acts as a liaison between the clinic and the outside community.
Manage the flow of patients in Clinic throughout the day
Compassionately use methods of communication appropriate for patients with neurosurgical disorders or conditions and cognitively impaired patients and their families
Obtain vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, pulse regularity and respiratory rate. Obtain orthostatic vital signs if indicated
Document pain assessment, fall history and current review of systems
Assist patients in completing clinic documents, including current medications, allergies, registration packets, general medical history and other standardized assessment tools
Maintain infection control standards, including hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Maintain infection control standards for exam rooms
Respond appropriately to patients in physical distress or emergency situations
In accord with level of education and certification, provide patient education regarding clinic processes, medication management and other aspects of care
Utilize critical thinking in the assessment of all patients, and communicate to clinician any abnormal vital signs, changes in condition, behavioral concerns or other notable observations
Assist with coordination of care, including providing clear and detailed information regarding scheduling of appointments and ancillary tests
Maintain designated levels of supplies in specified areas and assist in the general maintenance of the patient care areas
Collect, process and reconcile fee sheets and FOB worksheets daily to submit to charge capture
Schedule laboratory and radiological tests within UWMC
Assist with referrals to other health care providers, including physicians, and other specialty care providers
Accurately and thoroughly document provision of patient care in electronic health record
Support staff as required by clinic needs
Answer telephone calls in a professional manner, direct calls appropriately, and document actions in accord with clinic processes
May provide assistance with clinical screening of referrals to this sub-specialty clinic including obtaining outside records
May assist with completion of monthly and quarterly infection control, hand hygiene and environment of care audits
REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board; OR equivalent education/experience.
Legal Requirement: Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
