POSITION DETAILS

The City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law seeks an exceptional individual to serve as its Interim Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Programs. We look for a person who will be a creative and committed leader for our well-developed in-house clinic and externship program. The Senior Associate Dean will lead an outstanding group of faculty members who together have developed a nationally ranked clinical program. We seek a person who shares our commitment to social justice, thinks deeply about practice models and strategies that work to promote justice, and brings pedagogical insights to the design of programs to educate the next generation of public interest lawyers.

Since its founding in 1983, the CUNY School of Law's mission has been to train a diverse group of students to become excellent public interest lawyers. Consistent with this mission, the school has developed a rich lawyering curriculum spanning three years and culminating in a clinical program required for all third-year students. In 2007, the Carnegie Report praised our educational program for the unique way it prepares students for practice through extensive curriculum integration of law, lawyering, and ethical decision-making. The Senior Associate Dean continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the overall curriculum and in providing leadership to the clinical program.

The Senior Associate Dean facilitates the work of 22 tenured and tenure track faculty members who teach in clinical programs, 5 staff, a number of visiting faculty and fellows, and a growing number of full-time day and part-time evening students enrolled in capstone clinical programs - approximately 200 students in fall 2020. The program encompasses 9 live-client clinics (Community & Economic Development, CLEAR, Defenders, Economic Justice Project, Disability & Aging Justice, Immigrant & Non-Citizen Rights, Human Rights & Gender Justice, Mediation, and Workers Rights) and one hybrid clinic that has both live-client and placement based work (Family Law Practice Clinic) in which students and faculty practice under the umbrella of a 501(c)(3) organization called Main Street Legal Services, Inc. (MSLS). MSLS provides legal assistance locally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally every year. The program also includes two practice clinic programs (Equality & Justice and Health & Environmental) in which students are placed in public interest law offices and participate in a substantial curricular module.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Programs is expected to maintain and enhance academic excellence in the program, fully implement justice initiatives, lead curricular and program development at the Law School, represent the Law School in Local and National Legal, Educational, and Social Justice Communities, teach classes as needed, provide leadership in fund raising initiatives, and assist in seeking external support for programs.

The Interim Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Programs also serves as the Executive Director of Main Street Legal Services, Inc. (MSLS) which is a separately incorporated 501(c)(3) organization that houses CUNY School of Law's resident live-client clinics.

This position may include weekend and evening hours.

GENERAL DUTIES

The Interim Senior Associate Dean administers one or more key College programs. They develop, implement, and assess programs and services to produce high-quality results and meet strategic goals. They also coordinate activities among different units, and with areas outside the College, and may oversee staff, budget, operations, and facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

We seek a creative educator with significant legal practice experience and abilities as well as a strong commitment to social justice and working with diverse communities. Experience in clinical education and a record of scholarly achievement are highly favored. We look for someone with a collaborative leadership style, a developed set of management skills, and the ability to articulate and communicate the vision of the Law School's clinical program within the Law School, to the New York and national legal communities, and to the broader educational community. The candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to building and working in an anti-racist learning environment.

J.D. or its equivalent, substantial practice and teaching experience, at least 7 years' experience directing a live-client law school clinical program, significant scholarly achievement or the equivalent, and demonstrated management experience are required. Administrative, budgetary, and fund raising experience are preferred. New York State bar admission or the ability to be admitted on motion within one year of appointment is necessary to conform to MSLS's practice order (See New York Judiciary Law Sections 478 and 484).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$125,985 - $184,000; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
