SMSU’s Assistant Professor of English position's teaching load will be divided between on-campus English classes and the College Now (CN) concurrent enrollment program at SMSU (either 50/50 or 25/75, as needed)
Supervise hiring and training of high school teachers for CN English and LIT classes. Should ensure CN teachers adhere to SMSU English Program standards.
Supervise renewal of high school teachers brought into the program as provisional.
Site visits with high school teachers.
Work with CN administrators to increase SMSU CN English in new schools.
Assist in coordinating/instructing English part of year training day(s) for CN teachers.
Coordinate assessment of CN English.
Other duties assigned by CN Director within purview of CN at large.
Teach on-campus classes (including ENG 099, 151,251, 100-level Literature courses, and others)
Participate in Departmental activities (meetings, assessment, program evaluation) regularly.
Work well with others (principals, teachers, SMSU faculty and administration)
Duties also include student advising, contribution to student growth and development, evaluating student performance, scholarly activity, and service to the University community. SMSU, in its commitment to meeting the service needs of the region, expects faculty to engage in regional service, education or study as part of their community service responsibility.
An MFA in English.
Must have college experience with composition and literature, with a special interest in mentoring high school teachers and working to create the college classroom in the high schools.
Must be willing and able (with driver’s license or ability to get one if hired) to travel throughout the state on site visits to high schools served by this program.
Demonstrated commitment or proven strategies for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment and demonstrated ability or proven strategies to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds are required.
The successful candidate must be able to travel, work well with various on- and off-campus constituencies, communicate clearly, be organized and attentive to detail, and be a team player.
Collegiality within the department is highly desirable, as well as a willingness to work with the department’s Writing Committee to meet assessment and curriculum requirements.
Must have an understanding of and appreciation for liberal education, as well as a sense of collegiality.
Student-centered approach to education and a commitment to helping grow the English/College Now program.
PhD in English
High school classroom experience desirable.
Preference given to experienced candidates with knowledge and familiarity of concurrent enrollment.
Demonstrated abilities/ competence in instructional technology, including online instruction and commitment to interdisciplinary education is preferred.
