From Bridgewater State University’s inception in 1840 by Horace Mann as one of the first normal schools in America to the current day, BSU has worked to ensure that our students receive an accessible, affordable, and exceptional education.  BSU aspires to be the leader in our mission class for closing equity gaps for Black/Cape Verdean, Latinx, Native American, Asian, and other students of color.  BSU's institutional values, the work of the President’s Special Task Force on Racial Justice, and leadership of the Leading for Change Higher Education Diversity Consortium  underscore the campus' commitment to racial equity and other forms of social justice. 

BSU welcomes approximately 1,500 new transfer students to our campus each year, while nearly 50% of BSU’s total undergraduate enrollment is comprised of transfer students who transferred in prior semesters. Transfer Services at BSU recognizes the complexities often associated with beginning a new chapter of one’s academic journey and the Transfer Services team at BSU strives to support the transitional needs of all prospective transfers and matriculated transfer students through our student-centered approach. As evidenced by the creation of Transfer Central, we value the diverse body of transfer student populations we serve and offer them a centralized hub where they can meet with transfer-support representatives and receive the knowledge and guidance needed to become successful members of the BSU community. Whether it be building upon our preexisting transfer partnerships with our community college networks, assessing transfer credits, advising students on academic programs, educating students on various transfer program benefits, connecting transfer to campus resources or assisting students throughout their application process, the Transfer Services team strives to serve as liaisons and advocates for each individual transfer throughout their Bridgewater State University experience.

Position Summary:

Under the leadership of the Director of Transfer Services, the Transfer Counselor will strive to foster a welcoming, inclusive and equitable culture for racially and socioeconomically diverse transfer student populations at Bridgewater State University, while assisting with the day to day operations of Transfer Services. In this role, the Transfer Counselor will serve as a transfer advocate, in an effort to support the holistic learning needs of transfer students during both the pre- and post-admission phases of the onboarding process. The Transfer Counselor will assist in the planning of transfer student support programs, as well as contribute to the achievement of university enrollment goals by supporting and communicating admission policies and procedures to students, families, community college advisors, campus partners and the diverse communities we serve. The Transfer Counselor will educate all students on the processes involved with the transition to BSU and implement student engagement practices that support persistence and retention, with a focus on the diverse needs of all students including: African American/Black, Latinix, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, Multiracial and first-generation college students. These efforts support the overall success of our transfer student population.

Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
(Subject to change) (Saturday and Sunday as days off)

This is a full-time, 12-month APA position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.
