The Physician Assistant will be responsible for health care of MDS (myelodisplactic Syndrome) patients as an extension of the physician, including assessment of health status, diagnosis, development of plan of care and treatment of patient status. S/he will also be responsible for assessing, diagnosing and providing treatment to MDS patient population in collaboration with oncologist, for consultation, collaboration and referrals.
Responsible for the assessment and management of patients with a diagnosis of cancer, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
Responsible for developing, implementing, and tracking patient education efforts as it relates to chemotherapy, blood replacement products, growth factors as well as psychosocial concerns of patients, family and caretakers related to diagnosis of Cancer and the underlying disease.
Collaborate with the Infusion Center nurses and staff in the care and treatment of patients receiving chemotherapy/blood products, growth factors, and supportive care.
Complete patient's history and physical exams, review laboratory results and order appropriate tests, provide discharge instructions and patient education, and monitor follow-up appointments.
Obtain consents, monitor pre and post procedure status of patients; develop care plans for patients; document history, orders, notes and ongoing evaluation of patients; assure quality of care and standards are maintained; participate in daily rounds; and serve as liaison to referring physicians and external transfers.
Assist physicians with related duties as directed and perform other tasks as assigned.
Evaluate and treat patients in an outpatient office setting. Order appropriate diagnostic and laboratory testing.
Evaluate, trouble shoot and interpret results in collaboration with the Oncologist.
Participate in phone triage, unscheduled/urgent visits and f/u visits for the Oncologist.
Perform peer-to-peer reviews with insurance companies needed for various diagnostic testing and specialty medications for prior authorization.
Provide patient education about preventive care such as procedures, Screening, life style modifications, medical issues and use of prescribed medications.
Participate in in-house conferences with MDs and respond to emergency/code situations in the office.
Assists management with staff refresher training (Emergency protocols/ AED /Oxygen), skills evaluation of clinical staff, medical assistant with peer review for pre-certifications and monitoring of work flow, trouble shoot issues and ordering of supplies.
Maintain compliance with hospital, local, regional, state, national and professional Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
Assist with MDs to see patients and perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program, plus four years of related experience
Master's degree would substitute for experience
Current New York State PA license and board certification
Current BLS, ACLS, DEA
Computer proficiency, knowledge of Epic, MS Office software (Word/Excel), relational database (Access), and spreadsheet applications
Excellent problem solving, analytical(using quantitative analysis and critical thinking)
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to plan and meet deadlines
Excellent interpersonal, as well as verbal and written communication skills
Ability to actively listen to ideas and concerns and respond in an appropriate manner
Flexibility and ability to respond to a rapidly changing and demanding environment
Ability to retain composure under stress and promote our values of patient satisfaction
Experience in hematology and oncology
Experience with Columbia University and NYP systems and procedures
Participation in the medical surveillance program
Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
Wear N-95 respirator
Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
