NYU's Los Angeles Program is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach an undergraduate course focused on the ability to produce media and interact in realtime. The course will be under the sponsorship of NYU Shanghai's Interactive Media Arts program.
The course is expected to be taught in the Summer 2021 term. This intensive 2 credit course meets for about 4 hours per week, for 6 weeks of instruction. The preferred meeting pattern is 2 sessions per week for 2 hours each, but this is negotiable. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute "office hour" per instruction day, during which time the instructor will be available to meet with students. The instructor must be prepared to deliver course content remotely if conditions do not allow in-person instruction.
This course explores the disruptions and creative possibilities that realtime emerging media provides, through the lens of learning how to design, create, produce, and perform in realtime. Students will learn how to design and produce for realtime interactive audiences, the fundamentals of virtual production, digital content creation, and the basics of game engines and other software, all in the service of delivering a more engaging and intimate connection between audience and performer. Students will design and perform two distinct realtime performances as well as work together with peers to conceptualize, design, and produce a short realtime "pilot" using the tools and techniques learned in the first two projects.
Once selected, the instructor will need to flesh out a complete syllabus from an existing sample syllabus, in consultation with the NYU Shanghai Interactive Media Arts program and the NYU Office of Global Programs.
