This appointment is a 12-month position as a research scientist in the Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Statistics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Duties include the development of a strong research and teaching program in molecular image analysis, which contributes to the organizational mission (e.g., Agricultural Research Division, Quantitative Life Sciences Initiative, Department of Statistics, Office of Research and Economic Development). Responsibilities will include (1) developing methods for processing, segmentation, and analysis of molecular images; (2) developing software implementations of novel analytical approaches; and (3) using newly emerging analytical and computational tools to make significant contributions to imaging in structural biology (e.g., XFEL, cryo-EM).
The incumbent will be expected to average 0.30 FTE as determined by the CASNR Academic Appointment Guidelines. This will include one regular course per semester in Statistics. The incumbent is expected to develop and teach graduate seminars and workshops on topics relevant to imaging in the life sciences and contribute to educational activities associated with the doctoral program in Complex Biosystems. Specific teaching activities may be changed over time based on academic unit need.
The incumbent will be expected to average 0.70 FTE to support seeking and establishing effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations including effective integration with externally funded research groups and educational programming. The incumbent is expected to publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities
The incumbent will contribute, as an effective scholar and citizen of a land-grant institution, to the integrated mission of home units (e.g., department, initiative), including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy initiative, and beyond.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Biochemistry, or closely related field. Experience with statistical methods relevant to molecular imaging experiments, as demonstrated by refereed papers, presentations, or other completed projects, e.g., PhD thesis. Computing and methodological skills appropriate to the preprocessing and analysis of data types with which the candidate has experience. Communication skills, written, verbal and otherwise, at a level sufficient to interact easily with a broad range of researchers at UNL, with the academic world more generally, and with the broader Nebraska scientific community.
Demonstrated methodological novelty and creative ability in one or more area of deep learning and AI applicable to molecular imaging. This includes, but is not limited to, Bayesian statistics, Gaussian processes, image analysis, and prediction of optimal experimental settings and molecular orientation. Collaborative research experience in structural biology using either X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM approaches. Proficiency with modern object-oriented programming languages including C++ and Python.
