Job Summary
Seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to help, validate, and implement a state-of-the-art robotic COVID test platform at Caltech for high throughput COVID testing. The successful candidate will provide assay execution, technical data management, and operational support for the Caltech COVID testing laboratory, including maintaining quality control and reliable test assay workflow.

Job Duties
  • Provide support for assay development, assay quality control, and troubleshooting.
  • Carry out routine life testing of COVID samples in manual and automated assay settings.
  • Execute tracking and submission of test data on a timely basis.
  • Adhere to compliance of data entry into scientific databases.
  • Provide basic office tasks, including placing orders, answering phones, and maintaining office records.
  • Maintain consumable and reagent stocks (restocking and inventory control).
  • Support in lab instrument and equipment maintenance and tracking of instrument use.
  • Perform essential lab tasks such as buffer preparation and training and supervision of new lab assistants/interns.

Basic Qualifications
  • B.S. in biological, biochemical or chemical sciences.
  • Minimum of 2 years of lab experience, including familiarity with plate based biochemical, nucleic acid based or cell based assays,
  • Strong computer tool use skills, including familiarity with Excel, Excel formulas, and assay data interpretation and visualization.
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and electronic) and organizational skills.
  • Problem solving and service oriented skills.
  • Strong willingness to learn new skills when needed.
  • Proactive, highly responsible, self-motivated personality.
  • A willing and enthusiastic team member.
  • Mission dedicated.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Some familiarity with automated liquid handling platforms, with desire to acquire higher level skills in this area.
  • Computer literacy and basic programming skills, preferably VBA/VB.NET in the MS Excel context. Preferably experience with MS Power BI for spreadsheet data analysis and visualization.
