Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher III (Analytical Chemist) for the Office for Research. As part of the Office for Research, this position, reporting to the Director of Molecular Design & Synthesis, will be responsible for supporting the analytical needs of MD&S. This position works with the MD&S group members, labs, departments, units, and schools, across the university community, as well as with the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry groups to assist in the generation and preparation of preliminary data for grant proposals to secure extramural funding from traditional and non‐traditional funding sources.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Performs HPLC, LCMS, NMR, UV-Vis and other spectral analyses.
Maintenance of laboratory equipment, quality assurance, calibration, and standard management.
Teaches, trains, and supervises faculty, research associates, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, staff, scientists and others seeking to utilize the analytical equipment across schools and units of the university.
Prepares standard operating procedures and rules for the instruments under his/her charge.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's in chemistry with specialization in analytical, organic, pharmaceutical, natural product, or medicinal chemistry; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A minimum of two (2) years of industry experience is expected, preferably in a pharmaceutical industrial setting.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with analytical methods and validation procedures, proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Energetic, entrepreneurial and a critical thinker who can function independently but understands the importance of communication, teamwork, and work with a sense of urgency.
Good communication and presentation skills and be able and willing to train other users.
Hands on experience with analysis tools (HPLC, LC-MS, 1D/2D NMR, IR, UV), isolation (chromatography normal and reversed phase) and be able to keep excellent records.
Clear understanding of analytical method development and efficient analysis is key to success.
Knowledge of histochemistry, microscopy, processing techniques, preparation of specimens, medical terminology, chemistry, Good Lab Practices, Standard Operating Procedures, drug discovery and safety testing at a level normally acquired through a bachelor's degree and experience in a pharmaceutical company and/or molecular design and synthesis laboratory.
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
M.S. in chemistry with specialization in analytical, organic, pharmaceutical, natural product, or medicinal chemistry,
Chemoinformatic database experience
LC-MS operation and maintenance training
Basic understanding of NMR
Working knowledge of GLP or cGMP work would be advantageous.
Current in laboratory safety training
NMR (1H, 13C, 19F, 1-D and 2-D, Bruker, Varian or others)
HPLC and LC-MS (Waters, Shimadzu, Varian, HP, Advion or others)
Spectroscopy (IR, UV, Raman)
Automated flash systems (Biotage, ISCO, Reveleris)
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Laboratory environment: some local travel required to attend department meetings and conferences.
