Department Summary :
The Tufts University Public Safety / Fire Safety Office provides advisory, training, inspectional and other specific services related to fire and life safety for the Tufts community, as required to maintain compliance with applicable codes, laws, regulations, standards, guidelines and university policies.
Job Summary :
The Fire Safety Specialist is responsible for contributing to the mission of the Fire Safety Office through duties as assigned by the Fire Marshal or designee, and to assist in the delivery of an effective, comprehensive fire safety program for a University community by conducting a wide range of activities on all Tufts University properties. The primary objectives of the Fire Safety Office are to prevent human injury, minimize property damage and interruption of normal business due to fire and smoke as well as from fire suppression actions such as the release of water or dry chemical agents. These objectives are achieved through a combination of education and training activities, building inspections, maintenance of operational fire detection and suppression systems, and building evacuation activities; of which the Fire Safety Specialist assists to provide in a competent and professional manner.
3 years of related experience required
High School Diploma and 3 years of experience in a fire department or district; certified as an NFPA 1001- level II Firefighter or higher rank; or an Associate Degree and 2 years of experience (averaging 8 hours per week minimum) performing documented fire and life safety inspections or similar safety-related duties, for academic or similar institutions.
Valid U.S. Driver's License.
Basic skills in Microsoft Office, public speaking, PowerPoint presentation technical abilities.
A BS in Fire Safety / Fire Protection / Fire Science or equivalent level of training and education
Experience in fire safety (or related safety topics) program delivery
Experience as an inspector in fire safety (or related safety topics) regulations enforcement
NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector certification or equivalent
NFPA 1041 Instructor certification or equivalent
MA DFS Fire Equipment Certificate of Competency (current at date of hire)
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Occasional need for off hours work for special events, evening evacuation drills, etc...
