The Research Assistant I will be part of the Cortez Laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University and will be responsible for providing both research and organizational support for the laboratory. This position will primarily assist students, postdocs, and senior scientists with ongoing research projects, in addition to providing support for general laboratory operations. The Research Assistant I will report directly to Dr. Cortez, and communicate daily with the members of the laboratory.
The Cortez laboratory studies mechanisms that maintain genome integrity and promote the accurate replication of the genome. Our multi-disciplinary approach utilizes genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and proteomics to address the pertinent questions of the field. We are an interactive and highly collaborative group, with access to outstanding instrumentation and core facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in Research and Development:
Plan and conductbasic molecular biology and biochemical experiments in coordination with supervisor
Understand and follow experimental protocols
Collect, assess, and communicate data/results to supervisor
Prepare buffers and solutions (perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, serial dilutions)
Work with laboratory members to maintain inventories of consumables and perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment
A Bachelor's degree in a biological science field is necessary
At least six (6) months of lab experience is necessary
An ability to follow directions and perform tasks with limited supervision is necessary
Must be able to quickly learn new skills
Must be able to communicate information and keep accurate records of work performed
Should be able to prioritize tasks and have flexibility to perform specific duties to meet changing research needs and schedules
Must be an effective team player with an ability to perform in a rigorous and organized manner, have excellent interpersonal and analytical skills, and a strong work ethic
