Detailed Job Description Purpose and Scope of the Job
The purpose of the Senior Research Administrator (SRA) is to provide leadership and strategic support to the colleges and units of Rochester Institute of Technology as it expands its program of research. This person will:
Facilitate the submission for sponsored project funding at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Work intensively with faculty and staff to facilitate the preparation, review, and approval of proposals for submission.
Collaborate in a customized professional development program, geared to the specific needs of new and inexperienced principal investigators.
Assist faculty in identifying appropriate funding opportunities and guide them in developing competitive proposals.
Ensure that the units they support comply with governing regulations and institute policies with regard to sponsored research.
The SRA will support the design and implementation of an infrastructure to support a multi-million dollar research agenda that incorporates the work of major research centers.
The position involves developing a close working relationship with faculty and staff, department heads, directors, deans, and vice presidents across multiple colleges and divisions at RIT. Outside of RIT, the SRA will facilitate positive working relationships with funding agencies and colleagues at other colleges and universities (both domestic and foreign). The SRA will also be responsible for developing and delivering relevant training and education relating to proposal development and research administration.

Provide proactive leadership in the development and support of sponsored activities, including:
Conduct ongoing needs assessments to identify what services need to be developed or elaborated to support an intensive growth of research.
Create and conduct customized professional development services and programs for faculty and staff, targeting specific skills needed for applying for external funding and managing awards. Coach, mentor, and guide faculty, as needed, in one-on-one or group sessions on topics such as budgeting, managing multi-disciplinary projects, or technical writing.
In collaboration with center directors and college administration, promote networking among members of the faculty and staff with colleagues within the university, within the local and national community, and within other universities or in industry.
Form and facilitate teams of RIT faculty/staff and external partners to develop collaborative projects with research center directors and administration.
Assist faculty and staff with idea generation, project design and development; create budgets in agency-specific formats; manage electronic research administration functions, and assist in the writing of proposal narratives.
Research, identify and disseminate information about sponsors and funding opportunities. Teach members of the faculty and staff how to locate funding opportunities and how to reach out to program officers.
Support matching fundable ideas and RIT expertise with potential sponsors.
In collaboration with research center directors and administration, support and facilitate teams of faculty/staff and external partners to develop collaborative projects.
Schedule and participate in visits with funding agencies and college faculty and administration.
Assist faculty and staff with the preparation of scopes of work and budgets for industrial sponsors and for subawards/subcontracts with other institutions.
Conduct one-on-one meetings and seminars with college faculty/staff on topics such as developing relationships with sponsors, proposal writing, budgeting, and project evaluation strategies; and
Conduct final review of proposals to ensure compliance with RIT policies, sponsor guidelines, and overall excellence in the documents.
Support the growth of existing and planned research centers. Assist center directors in strategic planning and opportunity development.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors or Equivalent Experience
5 or more years higher education or related experience
Prior research administration experience
Knowledge of university administrative systems
Experience with proposal development and/or grant writing
Strong reading, writing, computing, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong analytical skills
Prior experience working with federal agencies
Certified Research Administrator qualification desirable.
In addition, the SRA must be able to handle multiple tasks; possess the ability to work in sometimes ambiguous situations; have strong reasoning skills; possess an astute understanding of the nature of higher education; be able to articulate capabilities of RIT to granting agencies; and possess initiative, foresight, diplomacy, and assertiveness, and be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels in the organization.
