The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University brings together researchers from different scientific disciplines to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly interactive research environment, laboratories work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers. The Zuckerman Institute is housed in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, an architectural masterpiece on Columbia University's new Manhattanville campus. The Gadagkar Lab within the Zuckerman Institute seeks a postdoctoral scientist to perform research using in-vivo extracellular recordings and/or imaging of neuronal activity in awake behaving songbirds. The Gadagkar Lab is broadly interested in the neural mechanisms of social behavior; the lab uses state-of-the-art awake-behaving electrophysiology, imaging, behavioral tracking, and computational modeling to take an integrated approach to understanding how male zebra finches learn to sing and how female zebra finches evaluate male songs, to reveal the neural principles underlying social communication. The applicant should ideally have expertise performing in-vivo electrophysiology and/or imaging to track the activity of populations of neurons during behavior. Exceptionally strong candidates with training in a different STEM field and highly motivated to transition to neuroscience may also be considered. Strong computational skills, including programming in Matlab or Python, as well as superior motivation, drive and demonstrated aptitude for carrying out independent research are highly desirable qualifications.
