Reporting to the Dean and CEO, the Assistant Director for Research will lead the research and publication programs of NUQ-IAS at Northwestern University in Qatar, and work collaboratively with the Research Manager for Grants and the Research Manager for Programs and Projects to develop NUQ-IAS into a globally recognized research institute. The Assistant Director for Research will work with faculty, staff and students at NU-Q to develop the Center’s research activities and fellowship programs at the undergraduate and postdoctoral levels and will oversee all NUQ-IAS publications. Primary duties will include mentoring Undergraduate and Postdoctoral NUQ-IAS Global Fellows; supervising NUQ-IAS’s research groups; conceptualizing and preparing the implementation of sponsored program proposals in collaboration with the Research Manager for Grants; developing and managing internal and external partnerships with other institutions in Doha, Evanston, and worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and/or the Arab world, whose goals and visions are aligned with NUQ-IAS. The Assistant Director for Research will also establish the center’s imprint, developing and editing the Center’s Press publications, including translations and digital publications. The Assistant Director for Research will also represent the Dean in research matters, when needed, internally and externally. The Assistant Director for Research will maintain a vibrant individual and collaborative research agenda corresponding with NUQ-IAS’s mission and focus and will be granted Assistant Professor status so that the person may design and teach undergraduate courses related to global communication and cultures at NU-Q. For this position NUQ-NIAS is particularly interested in expertise in sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab world, or South Asia.
Provide leadership to NUQ-IAS’s undergraduate and postdoctoral fellowships, through the provision of on-going, high quality, and supportive mentorship to fellows at the undergraduate and postdoctoral levels. Help develop and oversee a visiting faculty fellowship program.
Establish and oversee NUQ-IAS Press, including developing and editing an innovative list of publications related to NU-Q’s mission and NUQ-IAS key themes. Lead the editorial process for multi-lingual and digital publications, in collaboration with the NU-Q Library.
Assist the Dean and CEO, NUQ-IAS staff, and NU-Q faculty in organizing high-quality and high-profile colloquia, speakers’ series, workshops, and symposia on topics relevant to the Center’s research.
Collaborate with NUQ-IAS staff and NU-Q faculty in researching, conceptualizing, preparing, submitting, and implementing relevant sponsored programs.
Maintain a strong research agenda and publication track-record, including in top-tier peer-reviewed publications and university presses to contribute to raising NU-Q’s research profile. Engage in single and collaborative research on the Global South.
Support the Dean in establishing and managing meaningful collaborations with researchers and research institutions who share NUQ-QIAS research focus and vision in order to foster new research that is both globally focused and locally relevant.
Represent the Dean, as and when needed, on matters of research, within Northwestern University in Qatar and beyond.
PhD in media or related field required. Familiarity with research on global media, politics and culture, particularly interdisciplinary perspectives from the Global South required. Subject expertise in at least one of the following (Arab world, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, youth culture, digital media, global communication) is required; expertise in any combination of the areas above desired.
Two years of post-PhD administrative and research experience in globally focused, top tier peer academic institutions required.
Two to four years of teaching and/or research experience at US academic institutions required.
Experience in undergraduate and postdoctoral mentoring required.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Editorial experience, including multi-modal and digital publishing, strong writing skills, including non-academic public writing required.
Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with diverse populations at all levels required.
Command of at least one language other than English (particularly Arabic, French or any African language) is required, any combination of above languages desired.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Experience in fundraising and in working with grants and fellowships desired.
