The Benign Urology Disease Team conducts clinical and translational research. This entails collection of clinical data and specimens derived from patients. Specimens include blood, saliva, urine, fecal samples, and biological tissue. Samples are collected from consented subjects and de-identified clinical information on the subjects is collected over time. Processing of these samples are critical to the success of the clinical trials research studies. Additionally, there is a large amount of database entry, tracking, maintenance, and quality assurance related to these projects.
Under close supervision, the Data and Specimen Assistant will assist with clinical data collection, specimen collection and laboratory aspects of human clinical trials under the direction of the study teams. Assist with patient consenting to collection protocols. Assist with laboratory procedures while ensuring the integrity of the studies. Transport patient samples to lab per specifications and process for storage and shipment. Document the processing procedures and sample shipment information. The Data and Specimen Coordinator will maintain inventory and supplies relating to collection, processing, and shipping. Assist with coordination of specimen packaging and shipping with outside laboratories. Assist with sample management with investigators/coordinators and sponsors. Assists with data entry, database corrections, and report generation using web-based databases. Cleans, organizes and imports/exports data files and generates several weekly and monthly reports for the genitourinary study team. Assists in creating Standard Operating Procedures for accurate data entry and training of research staff. Communicates with clinical research project coordinators, Principal Investigators, study sponsors, CROs, and other research staff. Assists with follow-up requests for data as necessary and assure comprehensiveness of individual patient data records. Completes research data case report forms. Assist with compiling and reviewing statistical data (demographics, clinical and disease characteristics, response data, survival data, biomarker data) and provide reports as requested by Principal Investigator. This position requires regular interaction with a variety of internal and external contacts including Cancer Center investigators and staff, NCI staff, study sponsors and/or their representatives.
Theoretical knowledge in biology, microbiology, social sciences, or related field.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to handle blood for processing and shipping.
Ability to handle patients' biological samples, process of samples, and/or store and ship samples.
Experience with handling lab equipment sterile technique biosafety hoods and hazardous materials.
Ability to follow clinical research and/or research protocols.
Demonstrated ability and knowledge of using computer software applications including word processing and database applications and email. Accurate computer word-processing and database skills.
Knowledge to comply with the State of California laboratory guidelines/requirements regarding biosafety/universal precautions.
Ability to interact with a large variety of physicians, project managers, study coordinators and cancer patients in a professional and pleasant manner.
Excellent interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills (using grammatically correct written English and accurate typing) to interact with a variety of personalities at all levels of the organization, exercising tact, mature judgment, diplomacy, and flexibility to promote positive working relationships and job effectiveness. Skill at negotiating with various personalities and developing internal and external network of contacts. Excellent phone etiquette skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple projects and work at multiple locations.
Attention to detail required in file and record keeping duties.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Certified Phlebotomist and phlebotomy experience.
Knowledge of medical terminology and/or experience working with clinical trials.
