There is an opening for a research assistant position in the area of geosciences.
The goal of this position is to support and expand research in geoscience through computation and analysis of simulated and experimental data. The candidate will be working closely with experimentalists to design simulations recreating past and future experiments. Alongside the design of simulations, the candidate will be responsible for presenting their data in high quality figures/animations suitable for publication. While this is a collaborative role, the candidate will be responsible for running hydrocodes on their own, debugging common simulation errors, and interpreting the results in the context of high-pressure material dynamics.
Job responsibilities include expanding python tools in the Wicks lab and extending functionality, managing version control and updates and giving presentations on use of the code in the context of experiments.
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline required.
Some related experience required.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience.Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Master’s Degree in related Discipline.
Experience with optimization using the SciPy Python package. Additional familiarity with NumPy, Matplotlib, and building GUIs encouraged.
Experience with experimental high-pressure geophysics including shock/ramp compression, interferometry, and material dynamics
Proficiency in Python
Writing and maintaining projects (1000+ lines) for easy use by others
Creating static 2D and 3D plots as well as 2D animations
Automating repetitive processes including writing .txt files and organizing simulated data
Proficiency in MatLab
Converting existing code to Python
Use of multidimensional matrices to organize physical properties
