1. Determines methods, treatment proposals, time estimates, and photo documentation for work to be performed. 2. Consults with users. Schedules work. 3. Aids in instructing others in binding/conservation techniques. 4. Treats paper by such methods as cleaning, washing, deacidifying and mending, sizing, mylar encapsulation, mounting, matting, leaf-casting and enzyme treatment. 5. Maintains and uses tools, equipment and supplies. 6. Sets up, assembles, tests, repairs and operates machinery. 7. Binds, disbinds, repairs, restores and makes protective enclosures for books. 8. Performs a variety of tasks related to the conservation of books and paper, rare books and research materials. Maintains records. 9. Performs technical functions incidental to conservation activities.
Preferred Education: 1 year experience in conservation, mount making, or book repair under the supervision of a conservator. Completion of a formal program in bookbinding, studio art or related. Experience in special collections in an academic library; handling works of art, making museum mounts, matting, or housing specimens. Experience with Kasemake or similar and design software.
