Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
This position is in a laboratory (https://www.richard-lab.org/) that studies the neural mechanisms of affective and motivational processes underlying reward-seeking, and how these mechanisms are recruited or disrupted in models of alcohol addiction. We work with a variety of methods (optogenetics, chemogenetics, in vivo electrophysiology, fiber photometry, etc.) to measure and manipulate brain activity in rats engaged in various reward-related behavioral tasks. We currently have NIH funding to examine the neural mechanisms of aversion-resistant alcohol seeking and consumption, and cue-elicited alcohol seeking. Job Responsibilities:
40% Technical research support: Animal husbandry, breeding and welfare (necessitating occasional work on weekends), preparation of solutions, assistance with intracranial surgeries, necroscopy, brain sectioning, immunohistochemistry, slide preparation and microscopy, and maintenance of detailed laboratory records.
30% General laboratory support: Order and maintain inventory of common supplies for the laboratory, maintain equipment in working order, sterilize supplies as needed, keep records of protocols and standard operating procedures. Work with staff to ensure compliance with university and federal safety regulations. Assist in the supervision and training of undergraduate students.
30% Independent research: Execute a research project related to the neural and behavioral processes underlying motivated behavior under the supervision of a senior laboratory member and the PI. Maintain detailed records of all experiments and procedures in lab notebooks as well as in online databases and project management tools. Analyze collected data, review relevant scientific literature and summarize findings periodically in meetings or in writing.

Required Qualifications (must be mentioned on application/resume): • BA/BS with a major in neuroscience, psychology or a related field, or a combination of education and experience to equal 4 years. (Anticipated completion of a bachelor’s degree by Summer 2021 will be considered.) • Individuals must have some research experience in a clinical or basic setting and must be willing to handle/work with rodents.
