Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is seeking a motivated, experienced anatomic pathologist to lead the development of Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CVDL). The CVDL is being created from the current pathology service (https://vetmed.tufts.edu/pathology-service/). This will include necropsy service, biopsy service, histopathology service, and the histology laboratory. We are establishing a comparative pathology core service to support research and are expanding into molecular diagnostics. The combined service units provide diagnostic testing for the clinicians and patients in the hospitals and clinics that make up the Cummings Veterinary Medical Center (https://vetmed.tufts.edu/), as well as in support of research activities for internal and external clients. The CVDL is supported by four anatomic pathologists, three clinical pathologists, three anatomic pathology residents, and 13 – 15 technical staff.
The CVDL processes approximately 2,300 biopsies per year and 550 necropsies per year. The Clinical Pathology Laboratory performs hematology and clinical chemistry tests, urinalysis, fecal tests, cytology/fluid analysis, coagulation tests and a variety of other miscellaneous diagnostic tests serving over 50,000 clinical cases per year. Microbiology and most serology and endocrinology tests are sent to outside diagnostic laboratories. The services see a rich diversity of cases, both common and unique, providing ample teaching and research resources.
The Director, reporting to the dean, will be responsible for all aspects of CVDL operations including strategic planning, and personnel, material, and fiscal management. The CVDL director will supervise staff and work with the clinical pathology faculty to oversee the activities of the clinical pathology service.
The successful applicant will hold an academic appointment as professor/associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences (being re-named Department of Comparative Pathobiology). In addition to administrative responsibilities, the individual will contribute to diagnostic services, will participate in the DVM teaching, mentor anatomic pathology residents and contribute to the academic program of small and large animal house officers. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a DVM or equivalent degree and be certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or European College of Veterinary Pathologists in veterinary anatomic pathology. A minimum of 5 years of experience, with expertise in diagnostic biopsy and necropsy service are required. The Director must possess proven leadership, administrative, and management skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A demonstrated ability to work with others and build a collegial team atmosphere is essential. For candidates with a strong interest in research, a PhD would be considered an asset. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
