The Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a Research Scientist who will contribute to the day-to-day operations in the structural engineering, geotechnical and materials, environmental and other instructional and research fee-for-service operation laboratories.Â In this role, they will provide support to faculty, students, staff, and external users of the lab with in-lab and field research activities.Â
The Research Scientist will participate in laboratory and off-campus field operations, including design, acquisition, maintenance and repair of laboratory assets, supervision of people working in the laboratory and in the field, training development and delivery, administration of laboratory and field safety requirements, and financial management of fee-for-service operations. Collaboration with research teams and faculty within and external to CCEE in the conduct of research and other project work is an important part of the role. Â Â
The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency with electrical and computer engineering theoretical principles, employ software/hardware engineering and measurement and control theory knowledge to support sensor, data acquisition and controls architecture, benchmarking and integration for laboratory and field instruction and research applications. The position supports the development of new custom equipment systems that will include application of knowledge associated with custom sensor and circuit board design, embedded systems programming and networking architectures and communication protocols.Â Â Â Constructing, modifying, maintaining, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical equipment and software systems used for instruction and research will be part of this positionâs day-to-day support of CCEE laboratory operations.
This position will make engineering recommendations and set specifications for engineering hardware and software and systems to support sponsored research engineering projects and contribute to project reporting and project management requirements.Â Â These contributions may include design of custom software algorithms; engineering control software and implementation of model-based software development.Â

The successful candidate will be trained to contribute to research and instructional laboratory operations with a strong emphasis on quality, safety, space, laboratory asset and project time management.Â Further, the ideal candidate will apply their knowledge to operations and safety training of undergraduate and graduate students, staff and faculty and coordinating the development of standard operating procedures.

A Research Scientist II will supervise staff members and graduate and undergraduate student researchers, manage the financial operations of the labs and field work and perform other duties with a greater level of responsibility and autonomy than a Research Scientist I.
