The Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department at the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications from emergency veterinarians interested in providing high quality emergency medicine to client-owned animals in a dynamic academic setting at the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC ER service and ICU is open 24 hours, 365 days a year and is staffed by Criticalists, an ER Clinical instructor, Emergency/Critical Care residents, and Small Animal Rotating interns. Multiple members of the technical staff have their Emergency and Critical Care specialty certification.
This position is a full-time, non-tenure, contract appointment with the title of Clinical Instructor or Assistant Professor, depending on qualifications. Responsibilities include primary emergency case receiving in conjunction with the other service clinicians, clinical instruction of veterinary students and assisting small animal rotating interns. This emergency clinician position will consist of 10-hour shifts (with time built in for record writing/supervision) and vary between 3 and 4 days weekly. These scheduled shifts will be weekday afternoon or evenings, with no overnights, weekend or holiday shifts. The schedule is subject to change after biannual schedule reevaluation. This will allow an improved quality of life over typical emergency clinician positions by providing a non-standard emergency schedule with the added benefits of being associated with an academic center. Opportunities for advanced learning include the option to attend ECC resident rounds, journal club and/or shadowing with critical care, medicine, cardiology, surgery, anesthesiology, radiology and oncology. There is no required didactic teaching or research responsibilities for this position, but an interest in clinical teaching and learning is desired.
Essential qualifications include a DVM/VMD or equivalent foreign degree and a minimum of 3 years of small animal emergency experience, or completion of a 1-year rotating internship program.
