The Rocap research group in the School of Oceanography is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to work with a team using metagenomic approaches to investigate microbial functioning in Oxygen Deficient Zones. This position is full-time (100% FTE), 12-months/year, with an initial term appointment of one year (12 months), renewable depending on funding and/or satisfactory performance for a total period of up to 3 years. Salary will be commensurate with experience and employee benefits will be provided.
This project will use samples from the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Oxygen Minimum zone to obtain an integrated view of microbial functioning in the water column and on particles by integrating metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data with rate measurements and trace metal concentrations obtained by collaborators. There is also an opportunity to pursue laboratory experiments with cultures isolated from the ETNP ODZ. Communicating the results by writing and publishing scientific manuscripts and giving presentations will be a central part of this project, together with collaborating with an interdisciplinary group of scientists at the University of Washington.
The start date is negotiable, but the position is available from March 2021 with a preference to fill the position by June 2021. There is a possibility for partial remote work (within the U.S.) depending on circumstances.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in oceanography, microbiology, biology or a related field. In addition to interests in microbial ecology, evolution and/or biogeochemistry, the successful candidate for this position will have a strong genomic or computational background; demonstrated written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with individuals from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.
The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to collaborate with project investigators and other researchers. Willingness to mentor undergraduate researchers is preferred. Highly desirableadditional areas of expertise include experience with phytoplankton culturing, chemostats or anaerobic culturing setups.
