The XTRM/SPRL Space Physics Research Laboratory in the College of Engineering is seeking an experienced, highly motivated PCB Designer/Drafter to provide technical and project support for current and future space mission and instrument development projects.
XTRM/SPRL Labs is a facility of the College of Engineering that serves clients who are faculty, government agencies (such as NASA and DoD), and commercial companies in the development of unique integrated systems and instrumentation that are often used in challenging environments (e.g. space, artic, above/on/below the water). The XTRM/SPRL Lab professional staff, with faculty and researchers, have built more than 35 space systems and instruments; instrumented numerous sounding rockets, balloons and aircraft; and developed ground-based instruments. For seven decades, this lab has been one of a handful of university centers able to conceive, design, construct, test, and operate space flight instruments — a truly "end-to-end" operation.
Actively participate in the development of hardware to ensure highly reliable, verifiable end products. This position will be involved with the design and layout of printed circuit boards including schematic capture, PCB size optimization, PCB layer stack up, trace routing and interconnects in addition to creating the BOM and maintaining all PCB design documents. This includes promulgating IPC, PCB, DFM standards and guidelines for design content plus Gerber formats. Inputting production, quality assurance capabilities and restrictions from engineers. Helping review designs, quoting PCB designs with various vendors and coordinating the PCB design release process. Support maintenance of the schematic and component library. Creating PCB assembly documentation for engineering and manufacturing. Completion and documentation of engineering changes.
5+ years of experience in PCB Layout and Mechanical Design related functions
Experience with Altium Designer, Mentor Pads, and/or Orcad
Experience with AutoCAD Inventor and/or Solidworks
Experience with CAD drawing formats, standards and tools
Must exhibit thorough understanding of printed circuit board design and manufacturing
Experience in generating all Mechanical/Electrical assembly documentation
Experience with making ECN changes and tracking revisions to documentation
Strong organizational experience – accurate and detail oriented
Working knowledge IPC PCB standards
Working knowledge of Gerber and OBD file formats
Understanding of ESD principles
Demonstrated excellence in team participation and communication skills
Funding source requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency to work with export-controlled material.
Associates Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology with board layout experience.
5-10 years of experience in PCB Layout using Altium Designer
Knowledge and/or experience with RF and impedance controlled designs
Knowledge and/or experience with SMT production and generating associated files
Knowledge and/or experience with flexible PCB designs
Knowledge and/or experience with flight polymeric materials for NASA hardware
This position may be underfilled at the intermediate level, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. A higher salary may be considered for an exceptionally qualified candidate. The salary ranges are as follows:
