Conducts experimental research lab work. Assists in design of one or more specific phase(s) of entire project(s). Completes mathematical calculations, &/or computer tasks &/or assists in judging validity of data. Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical & Good Laboratory Practices.
Under limited supervision of the Research Assistant Professor, responsible for the daily routine operation and maintenance of the instruments in the Flow Cytometry Core Facility. Responsibilities include performance of routine and complex flow cytometry assays/sorting for investigators, performance of instrument quality control, participation in assay development, sample preparation, data acquisition/analysis, data compilation and reporting; management of data backups. The candidate will perform laboratory related duties including: tracking job flow, processing paperwork, maintaining instruments and safety documentation, and communicating with clients, staff and faculty as needed. Additional responsibilities include assisting Manager in the administration of facility operations.
Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic and complex experiments both analysis and cell sorting.
Operate flow cytometers, both analyzers and cell sorters
Set-up and conducts multi-laser high-parameter experiments for translational research from clinical specimen.
Observes experiments, collects, records, summarizes, analyzes and interprets research data; collates relevant mathematical results and prepares complex tables reflecting relationships of multiple tests.
Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy.
A fully functioning level of understanding in the following highlighted skills is required:
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression
Cell culture, cell isolation, cryogenic storage
Aseptic technique Immunology:
Human Specimen Collection (tissue, blood, urine):
Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.
Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results.
Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.
Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
Tracks & summarizes lab supply expenses.
Verifies accuracy of invoices.
Orders &/or maintains inventory of reagent, mice &/or lab supplies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Demonstrated laboratory experience;
Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols;
Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations;
Attention to detail and accurate record keeping;
Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
2-3 years experience in flow cytometry with technical expertise in assay performance-preparation, data acquisition and multilaser analysis and cell sorting expertise.
Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and training experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Capacity to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and to recognize when to seek supervisory assistance.
Experience with diverse laboratory techniques/methods including molecular biology technologies (PCR, in situ hybridization), Western Blotting, and cell function assays.
